The Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has today commenced Social Media in Journalism Training for staff of Abubakar Rimi Television with a view to building their capacity in modern day journalism practice and especially television production. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training, Executive Director of CITAD, Dr. Y.Z Ya’u said “journalism has profoundly changed over the years and social media has also transformed the journalism practice, as such media practitioners have to strive and catch up with the emerging trend in order to best serve their different audience”. Elaborating on social media, Y.Z maintained that “social media allows journalists to reach wider audience easily and in a cheaper way even though it has it’s own challenges, there are positive and negative sides of social media, but, what is important is for the journalists to recognize that and use it to uphold ethics and professionalism and for the betterment of the society”.
Also in her remarks, the Managing Director of Abubakar Rimi Television, Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, began by thanking CITAD for accepting to train her staff on social media in order to improve their journalistic duties. Hajiya Sa’a observed that new media is gradually penetrating into journalism practice and the way out is the need for journalists to master it’s skills so that they efficiently operate in a technology advancing era. Commenting on the role of social media in advertisement, she said “it is becoming more and more evident that the use of social media will enhance the chances of a broadcast industry in generating more revenue, people all over the world can access and follow their areas of interest in programming and eventually put their money”. Hajiya Sa’a advised the trainees to be attentive so that they acquire the skills to improve their operations.
