How CITAD Actualizes My Dream Career in Digital Photography–Photographer

A young enterprise and aspiring digital photographer said she actualized her lifelong dream of becoming a refined photographer through the auspices of Digital Livelihood training.

The training, organized by the Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) with support from Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is aimed at facelifting the lives of young girls in contemporary digital innovation for sustainable development.

The beneficiary, identified as Hussaina Ibrahim Hamma made the revelation in Jama’are local government at the closing ceremony of Digital Livelihood training in Bauchi state.

Hamma said, “I have always had a passion for photography which was actualized by CITAD through the digital innovation program”.

“I gained suitable experience during the training which drastically changed my life. I developed an interest in photography after completing the digital livelihood training”.

“Now I don’t have any ambition other than to become a professional digital photographer in my life”.

She further said that “The skills acquired during the training will significantly assist in establishing and sustaining a business enterprise, particularly in areas of digital technology for self-reliance”.

She promised to leverage the knowledge obtained during the training and promote her chosen career.

The Digital Livelihood is a four-monthly program that took place in Jama’are and Itas Local Governments of Bauchi State and focused on training women on digital technology and digital entrepreneurship in northern Nigeria.

The program equips young girls and women with the basic knowledge of technology, skills acquisition, and information and communication technology (ICT) to make them self-reliant, and useful to themselves and employers of labor.

Digital Creativity and Innovation for Young Women (DICI-YOW) Training Moves from Concept to Reality

In Azare Bauchi state training centre, the women-focused incubators training entitled Digital
Creativity and Innovation for Young Women (DICI-YOW) that has been conducted by the Centre
for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) with support from Lenovo Foundation
has yesterday entered into third phase. The phase termed business ideation and aimed to
introduce the participants to the business environment, capital requirements, capital mobilizing
strategies, conceptualize the value chain of the business, understand the market and client
base building, digital marketing, labour and skills needed for the business and business
sustainability issues. The participants have since been trained in basic digital literacy that
consisted of Introduction to Windows, Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet
application. Also, they undergone training on courses such as graphics design, mobile app
development, website design and some mobile and computer software (Mobile tools).
Due to the skills acquired, most of the trainees are eager to secure jobs or mobilize capitals and
start ICTs related businesses. To help the trainees achieve their dreams, yesterday at the Azare,
Bauchi state training centre, the trainees were trained on how to secure jobs or source
entrepreneurship and business support. The training let the participants to understand that
there are jobs available in Nigeria but most of the jobs come with certain set of requirements.
Soft skills such as the digital skills provided by Lenovo training are basic requirements that an
employer expects someone to have in order to be successful in a job position.
The training has yesterday demonstrated websites that the participants can visit such as
jobberman.com, ziprecruiter, teachaway, careerjet, indeed, linked in, glassdoor to secure jobs,
soft loans and grants from government initiatives like Bank of Industries (BOI), Bank of

Agriculture (BOA) and foundations so that they can be self-reliant and even employ others as an
entrepreneur cannot work alone.
Other opportunities shared to the participants included Women Startup Challenge, Tech
Startup Grant, 2023 ‘Open Minds – Young Voices’ Youth Activists Program, the 3rd Cohort for
iHatch free intensive incubation program and the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).
In order to make things easier, the participants were urged to be on CITAD facebook pages i.e
friends of CITAD, peace Now, CITAD Alumni etc where such information has been shared
regularly by Job Placement Information Services (JOPIS) scheme of CITAD assisting youth
looking for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities by bringing information about job
opportunities to them. JOPIS Unit are getting job opportunities on newspapers from Libraries,
collaborating with reliable sites advertising job opportunities and creating library and reference
on the job opportunities so that people can benefit from.

Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) under Digital Livelihood and Digital creativity and Innovation Programs has trained young women and girls to acquire information communication technology (ICT) knowledge. The goal of these programs was to contribute to reducing the gender digital divide and unemployment through technology skill transfer that will enable young women and girls to acquire ICT-based entrepreneurship skill and set up small scale ICT-based businesses. To achieve aforementioned goal, on 11th and 12th December, 2022, the Job Placement Information Service (JOPIS) unit of the Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has organized sensitization workshops for the beneficiaries of digital livelihood and digital creativity innovation programs in both Kano and Bauchi (jJama’are and Itas) training centers on how to secure jobs and source entrepreneurship and business support.

The workshops introduced the participants to sites that they can visit to secure soft loans and grants from government initiatives, Bank of Industries (BOI), Bank of Agriculture (BOA) and foundations so that they can be self-reliant and even employ others as an entrepreneur cannot work alone. 

At the start of the workshop, a call of volunteers from Save the Children was shared and helped the participants to apply. The job opportunity is looking for applicants with ICT-Based skills similar with that of digital livelihood and digital creativity beneficiaries to actively involved in the implementation of the PLANE project. The opportunity paid attention to female candidates, marginalized groups and those with disabilities

CITAD to Provide Digital Skills Training to 200 Girls

The Centre for Information Technology and Development with support of Lenovo Foundation had on the 23rd of June, 2022 organized a One Day Round Table Forum on the Challenges of Seeding and Nurturing Creativity and Innovation among young Women in Northern Nigeria at Hall B, CITAD.

The Discussion which was chaired by Professor Asabe Sadiya Muhammad, Provost, Aminu Sale College of Education, Azare had Dr. Sana Muaz of the Department of Software Engineering, Bayero University, Kano, Aliyu D. Aliyu, an Independent Consultant and Malama Aisha Bako, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Onyx Investment Advisory Limited, Abuja as the panellists. The discussion is part of the Centre’s project titled Digital Creativity and Innovation for Girls (DICIG) that will work towards empowering girls to have access to digital skills in order to address the gender digital divide in Northern Nigeria with aim to: Provide digital skills training for 200 girls (100 per year), to produce 80 digital entrepreneurs (40 per year) and create 160 new digital jobs for girls (80 per year) Selected participants were: girls between the ages of 18-30 who have a minimum secondary school education and are from Bauchi, Gombe and Kano States in addition to having an interest in building and running their business.

Giving an update of the project at the forum, the program officer of the project, Engineer Kamaluddeen Umar said the three main objectives of the project are to: Provide digital skills training for 200 girls (100 per year), to produce 80 digital entrepreneurs (40 per year), and create 160 new digital jobs for girls (80 per year). Speaking about how the project will be conducted, Engineer Kamaluddeen stated that the program will be conducted on phases. The phase one of the project will be on the Basis Digital skills which will last for one month and it is expected that the participants will undergo a 20-hour basic digital literary consisting of Introduction to Windows, Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet application while the phase two of the project will concentrate on advance Digital Skills which will also last for another one month. Participants at this stage will undergo another 30-hour module of advance digital skills. The phase three of the project will look at business ideation which will take participants two months.

He went further to state that the phase four and five of project will give the participants the opportunities to learn business development support services and Transition to market. At the end, he mentioned that a second level of selection will be conducted at the end of the digital basic skills training where participants will be selected based on the followings: performance at the digital skills training phase, interest to continue and preparation and submission of a business idea. Speaking at the panel of discussion, one of the panelists, Aliyu D. Aliyu, an Independent Consultant started by lamenting that there are a lot of challenges with regards to socio- economic and cultural role in society, he went further to say that over 70% of businesses in the country are controlled and owned by men and there are small number of women role models in the society which is affecting the development and creativity of young women in the society. Speaking about problems solving, Mr. Aliyu stated that women are very creative and good problems solvers, all the young women needed now is thinking outside the box.

He mentioned that to be successful nowadays one has to be creative using digital devices, get inspired by others and have a mentor. Mr. Dahiru said getting a mentor will help one to realize his dreams and bring out his creativity. Citing an example at the discussion, the speaker said there are a lot of young women who are making huge amount of money by using their talents and creativity online; what one needs is just to sit and think outside the box and come up with new innovation. Advising the young women at the forum, Mr. Dahiru said young women need to use their time in a way that will better their lives, use social media in an effective and rewarding way, set their priorities and know how to achieve them. He also advised that in doing business one needs to know that what matter most is herself only, think of the way to get grant and create a great business. Also speaking at the forum, Dr. Sana Muaz of the Department of Software Engineering, Bayero University, Kano started by narrating about her own life, Dr. Sana said she grew up in an area where girls are given less priority and attention. Dr. Sana also said that she met with many obstacles while growing up but passion and zeal to excel made her to keep going. Speaking about the importance of ICT, Dr. Sana stated that for women to be economically independent they need to embrace ICT, and for this to happen young girls need to be nurtured. Discussing on starting new and innovative business by young women in the society, Dr. Muaz said starting a new business is not the challenge but how to sustain it and bring good vision into it. She stated that the issue of competition needs to be looked at; young entrepreneurs needs to be creative and innovative in starting their businesses, don’t just go into business because others are making profit out of it, create your own brand. She added Advising the young girls at the forum, Dr. Sana said this society is a male dominated society but women need to work hard to penetrate into it, however, in trying to penetrate, she advised the participants not lose their women self because one day they will be role model to other women.

Do not be discouraged by failure and what people will say about you, focus on what you believe is good and work tirelessly towards its success. In her contribution, Malama Aisha Bako started by lamenting that most of the apps being created are being developed by men which made the applications to be women biased and not addressing most of the women needs. By this Malama Aisha said women need to be involving themselves and equip themselves with better ICT knowledge in order to compete in this competitive world. She went further to say women can make a lot of money on social media if they utilize the platforms well instead of creating nuisance and making the platforms for chatting and fun. According to her, platforms like TikTok and Instagram are paying and bring huge amount of money to those that know how to use them well. Speaking further, Malama Aisha said there are many young women who are selling their products using technology tools. Giving an example, Malama Aisha mentioned that she knows of a woman that is selling tomatoes in a modernized way, where she package it in a crate to send it to her customers in Lagos and the products are being purchased on social media page she created.

Closing the discussion, the chairperson of the forum, Professor Asabe S. Mohammed commended CITAD for coming up with this initiative, she stated that even though this is not the first time CITAD is organizing this kind of program but this one is unique looking at the approach of the program and the different components its contains. She went further to state that nurturing young girls and women is key to the development of women nowadays and this particular one is timely looking at how young women are being abandoned in the society. At the end she urged the participants to seize the opportunity and the challenge thrown at them to better their lives and the society at large.

HOTPEN – No fewer than 200 young girls and women in Kano state benefited from Digital Creativity and Innovation training organized by the Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD to revamp the entrepreneurial spirit as a critical factor for sustainable development.

The Centre said the program is designed to empower young girls to have access to digital skills to address the gender digital divide and reduce poverty in Nigeria.

Engr. Kamal Umar, who is the Technical Officer of the Centre, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday in Kano.

HotPen reports that the capacity-building training which took place at Hall B, CITAD main office in Kano, titled; “The Challenges of Seedling and Nurturing Creativity and Innovation Among Young Women” had Prof. Asabe S. Muhammad, Provost Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare as the Chair of Occasion, Dr. Sana Maaz from the department of Software Engineering, Bayero University, Kano.

Others include: Aliyu Dahiru Aliyu, Assistant Editor, HumaAngle Media, and Aisha Bako, Chief Executive Officer, Onyx Investment Advisory Limited, Abuja.

Engr. Kamal opined that “Empowering young girls to have access to digital skills is one way to addressing the gender digital divide in the country”.

He said “bridging the digital divide will contribute to the greater empowerment of women to overcome gender marginalization, unemployment, and poverty”. Kamal revealed that the training will significantly assist young women in the de-feminization of poverty and avail them with an opportunity to contribute to their bid for wealth creation.

Addressing the participants during the training, Dr. Sana Maaz went down memory lane and explained to the young women the importance of entrepreneurship in the current tides of technology and self-reliance as a woman.

Dr. Sana recounts her ordeal as a woman in a family of 9 with a single male child in the ancient city of Kano and how she defeated stereotypical maxim associated with women in Northern Nigeria.

Mr. Maaz counseled the young women to develop an open mindset and become drivers of innovation not passengers of it. She noted with dismay the presence of human capital (Seedling) and lack of spirit in nurturing young girls in our societies.

Highlighting the challenges young women are experiencing in nurturing creativity and Innovation in Nigeria, Aliyu Dahiru Aliyu, one of the leading panelist laments how Cultural, Religious and Political milieus among other significant barriers are discouraging digital creativity and innovation among young women.

Aliyu echoed the need to carry everyone along in respect of gender in the current paradigm shift from analog to digital technologies on businesses in the world.

He attributed lack of incentives, motivation, and role models for young women as part of the barriers hindering them to start businesses. Aliyu further advised young women to leverage on digital technologies for wealth creation.

DIGITAL CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION FOR YOUNG WOMEN (DICI-YOW)

Invitation for participation 

The centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) with support from Lenovo Foundation is starting women-focused incubatorship entitled Digital Creativity and Innovation for Young Women (DICI-YOW). The goal of the initiative is to create jobs for women and girls while the specific objectives are:

  1. To provide digital skills training for 200 girls (100 per year)
  2. To produce 80 digital entrepreneurs (40 per year)
  3. To create 160 new digital jobs for girls (80 per year)

The Programme consists of four phases and will last 10 months as followed:

Phase 1: Basic Digital Skills (one month)

Phase 2: Advanced Digital Skills (1 month)

Phase 3: Business Ideation (2months)

Phase 4: Incubator (6months)

Expected outcome:

As an incubator programme, it’s beneficiaries will at the end harvest some digital businesses providing goods or services to the public 

Target Beneficiaries 

  1. Beneficiaries must be girls between the ages of 18-30
  2. They must have a minimum of secondary school education 
  3. Must be capable of communicating in both written and oral English 
  4. Must be interested in building and running a business of their own 
  5. Participants must be based either in Kano, Bauchi or Gombe states. In addition, participants should ordinarily be resident in either Azare, Gombe or Kano or can make arrangement to accommodate themselves in any of these three places for the duration of the programme.

Invitation 

Interested girls who meet the criteria above are invited to apply. Applicants should include photocopies of their credentials, indication of interest of participation letter. Application should be submitted on or before June 11, 2022. 

Note: 

While at the level of incubator participants would be provided with some training allowance, participation in the first two phases will not attract allowance. In addition, progression into the different phases of the programme is based on performance.

Empowering girls to have access to digital skills is one way of addressing the gender digital divide. But bridging the digital divide should not just be an end in itself. It should contribute to the greater empowerment of women to overcome gender marginalization. In particular, digital skills should be the tools to create jobs for women and girls, thus reducing unemployment amongst women and reducing poverty as well.  In other words, this should be a means for the de-feminisation of poverty in the Nigeria. 

Objectives 

The digital creativity and innovation for girls (DICIG) is specifically designed to contribute in doing this. Its specific objectives include:

  1. Provide digital skills training for 200 girls (100 per year)
  2. To produce 80 digital entrepreneurs (40 per year)
  3. Create 160 new digital jobs for girls (80 per year)

Target Beneficiaries 

  1. Beneficiaries must be girls between the ages of 18-30
  2. They must have a minimum of secondary school education 
  3. Must be capable of communicating in both written and oral English 
  4. Must be interested in building and running their business

  1. Phase 1: Basis Digital skills (one month): participants will undergo a 20-hour basic digital literary consisting of Introduction to Windows, Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet application.  
  2. Phase 2: advance Digital Skills (one Month): participants will understand another 30-hour module of advance digital skills.
  3. Phase 3: business ideation (2 months}
    1. Introduction to business regulatory environment 
    2. Tech ideas: moving from concept to practice
    3. Conceptualizing the value chain of the business 
    4. Produce/service specification
    5. Understanding the market and client base building  
    6.  Digital marketing
    7. Labour and skills need for the business
    8. Capital requirements and capital mobilizing strategies

    10. ICTs in Business 
  4. Phase 4: business development support services (6moths)
    1. Enable cohort to register their business and meet all corporate requirements 
    2. Service/good packaging and branding 
    3.  Developing Exit Plans 
  5. Phase 5: Transition to market (one month): This period is for implementing exit plan and getting out to the real world of business

Excepted Outcomes 

Interested girls who meet the criteria above are invited to apply. Applicants should include photocopies of their credentials, indication of interest of participation letter. Application should be submitted on or before June 11, 2022. 

Selection Processes

An advert will be prepared, invited interest and qualified potential participants to apply to enrol. Selected participants will undergo an orientation programme of one day during which the nature of the programme would be fully explained to them.

The second level of selection is at the end of the digital basic skills training: here participants will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. Their performance at the digital skills training phase
  2. Their interest to continue
  3. Preparation and submit of a business idea
