SOCIAL MEDIA TRAINING FOR JOURNALISTS

In continuation of its capacity building on social media tools, CITAD in partnership with SAVI Jigawa State Office conducted a two-training on social media for journalists in Jigawa State. The training which held on 29th and 30th July at the Manpower Development Centre, Dutse was attended by 20 journalists from different media organizations in the state. Welcoming participants to the training on the first day, the SAVI STL, Mal Jibrin Ali Giginyu said that they have partnered with CITAD for the training because of the increasing importance of social media in journalism profession. He said that we have reached an era where media employers demand for multimedia skills from prospective employees and therefore advised the participants to take the training seriously and make the best of it. He thanked CITAD for extending the gesture to SAVI Jigawa and for the continued partnership between the two organizations.

REPORT OF 2ND EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRY LITERACY QUIZ FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS HELD ON 13th JUNE 2013, IN DUTSE, JIGAWA

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) and Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) conducted the 2nd Extractive Industry Literacy Quiz for Secondary schools in Jigawa state on 13th June, 2013. The objective of the quiz was to promote awareness about the extractive industry transparency as provided in the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) Act, including accounting for environmental degradation. The qiz which was part of a larger project being implemented by CISLAC across the country was supported by Oxfam Novib.

Readying Principals for the Digital Era

A report of a one-day ICT sensitization workshop fro principals of secondary schools in Kano

 

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has, for the second time, conducted an ICT sensitization workshop for Kano State Secondary Schools principals on Monday 6th May, 2013 at Rumfa College, Kano. The first one was conducted on 5th July, 2012 which was attended by 28 principals and 2 zonal education officers (ZEOs). This year’s workshop witnessed the participation of 36 principals and three (3) ZEOs from three education zones of the State, namely Kura, Dambatta and Minjibir. The workshop was declared opened by the Director General of Kano State Senioir Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSSMB), Alhaji Habibu Hassan who was represented by the Director Recruitment and Training Malam Rabiu Muhammad Jakada, KSSSSMB,. Other officials of the board presente were Minjibir Zonal education officer Alh. Tijjani Kabara, the ZEO of Kura, Mal Tafida M. Sarari and Danbatta Zonal Education Officer Alh. Maiwada.

Enhancing capacity of CSOs in the use of Social Media

CITAD in partnership with SAVI organized a two-day workshop for CSOs on the use of Social media for Advocacy held on 2ND and 3rd May, 2013 at Tahir Guest Palace Hotel, Kano. The objective of the workshop was to build the capacity of CSOs in the use of social media to support the various advocacy efforts they were undertaking. More than 50 participants attended the workshop. The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Mal Kabiru S. Dakata who outline the programme of the worked and elaborated on its objectives. He added that the workshop was organized in conjunction with SAVI, Kano which supported the initiative as part of its programme of capacity building for CSOs in the state.

ICT TRAINING FOR EXAMINATION AND ADMISSION OFFICERS OF JIGAWA STATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The purpose of ICT in education is not only to familiarize students with the use and working of computer, and related social and ethical issues but also to enhance the capacity of teachers in learning processes. Teachers can use it to aid their teaching, while administrators can use them for day to day running and management of their institutions. Considering the need of ICTs for teachers in educational environment and the volumes of documents and communications which administrators are handling, computer skills have become necessary for them. Yet such staff and officers have no time to learn the computer in a conventional computer school given their commitment. As part of its effort to implement the ICT in Education policy of the State, the Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology approached CITAD to design a training which requires minimum time on the part of the participants. CITAD developed a fast track module which is well tested and given to a number of other similar clients in Bauchi, Edo and Katsina States as well as the. The objectives of the training include:

WORKSHOP ON ICTS FOR LEGISLATIVE PURPOSES

Like in other spheres, ICTs are important in legislative work. tHis was why the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) and State Accountability and Voice Initiative (SAVI), Jigawa State Office  partnered to deliver workshop on ICTs in Legislative Work for support staff of the Jigawa State House of Assembly. The workshop held on 20th and 21st, March, 2013 at the seminar room of Manpower Development Centre, was attended by 20 staff of the House, mostly committee secretaries.  The aim of the workshop was to expose them on the various uses of ICTs for legislative purposes and enhance their skills in these of some of the basic tools. In his opening remarks, the Director of CITAD said that the two organizations were committed to enhancing the work of the legislature and therefore thought that this was another angle for them to offer their contribution.

Jigawa state is one of the states benefiting from CITAD annual ICT quiz. This year`s quiz marked the 5th round in Jigawa after its inception in 2003.

OBJECTIVES OF THE QUIZ

Like in other states where similar event takes place annually, the major objectives include but not limited to following:

  • To enlighten secondary school students on career prospects in ICT profession,

On 17th November, 2012, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has organized an entrepreneurship inter secondary school quiz competition. The quiz competition was among the series of activities organized by the Centre to celebrate this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week which comes up from the 14-20, November 2012. The Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is a global effort to address problems of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. A month before the quiz competition, series of career talk lectures were conducted to the schools that are expected to participate in the quiz.

In its effort to promote ICT knowledge among the secondary school students, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has, for the third time, conducted the ICT quiz competition for Bauchi State Secondary Schools on Saturday 8th December, 2012 atGovernmentGirlsCollege, Azare. The quiz witnessed the participation of 15 secondary schools from different parts of Bauchi State and presence of Honourable Baba Abubakar Suleiman, member representing Azare/ Madangala, Bauchi state house of Assembly- who served as the Guest Speaker and as well as chairman of the Quiz. Also in attendance were Honourable Commissioner Bauchi State Ministry of Education ably represented by the Katagum Zonal Education Director, Mallam Maikudi, Chairman Bauchi State Special Schools Management Board represented by Alhaji Inuwa Dattijo, the Chairman Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board represented by the Director Schools Services (SUBEB), Malam Umaru Musa Chinade,and the  Honourable Commisioner Bauchi State Ministry for Science and Technology represented by Alh. Sule Adamu Madara among others.

ICTS IN SCHOOLS WORKSHOP

Among the strategies contained in the Jigawa State ICTs in Education Policy is “training of teachers and school administrators on the use of ICTs”. To rollout the implementation of this strategy, the Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology approached CITAD to design and organize a sensitization workshop for principals of secondary schools on ICTs. CITAD developed a package entitled ICTs in Schools whose objectivities include:

  1. Enhance the understanding of the participants on ICTs
  2. Explain the various uses of ICTs in schools and administration and management
  3. Enhance their skills on the use of ICTs
  4. Provide participants with various sources of support and assistance for ICTs in schools
  5. Sensitize them on the need to make effective use of ICTs in the schools
  6. Expose them to quick ways of learning the computer

QUARTERLY LECTURE ON ICTS FOR DEVELOPMENT

CITAD in collaboration with FCE (TECH) BICHI has today (17/10/2012) conducted a quarterly lecture on ICTs for Development. It was held at the Auditorium Hall of the college. The theme for the lecture was “ICTs, Teachers and Teaching: The linkages and Synergies”. The guest speaker was Prof U.G. Danbatta. Those in attendance include the Provost of the college, registrar and all other principal officers.
